Up, up and away with Doves

A hundred yellow balloons lit up the bright, sunny sky above the Cray Valley on Mother’s Day, thanks to a balloon release organised by Doves Funeral Directors in Orpington and Swanley.

The event was held in association with Rev Jane Winter from St Andrews Church and Rev Paul Prentice from St Mary’s Church, both in St Mary’s Cray.

Members of their congregations wrote tags with messages for mums no longer with us, attached to the biodegradable balloons.

After a short speech and prayer made by Rev Winter, the balloons were released by Chris Pierce, Councillor for Cray Valley East, and Funeral Director Bill Wyatt.

They were supported by Liz Sargent, a Funeral Arranger Administrator at the Orpington branch, and Swanley Funeral Arranger Administrators Lorraine Wormley and Rachael O’Donoghue.

Liz said: “This is our way of showing the community that we’re here for them not just on sad days but on happy days too, putting a smile on their faces so it makes people feel lifted.”

Lorraine added: “It was a lovely sunny day where the community came together to celebrate. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed tea, coffee and cakes while remembering their loved ones.”
